Honda And Renesas Collaborate To Develop High-Performance System-on-Chip (SoC)

Friday, 10 Jan 2025

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. and Renesas Electronics Corporation have announced a strategic agreement to create high-performance system-on-chip (SoC) specifically designed for software-defined vehicles (SDVs).

This SoC will deliver leading AI performance of up to 2,000 TOPS with excellent power efficiency, reaching 20 TOPS/W. It is intended for use in Honda's upcoming "0 Series," the latest line of electric vehicles (EVs). The partnership was revealed during Honda's press conference at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

Honda is developing SDVs with a unique architecture to provide a personalized and optimal mobility experience for each customer. The 0 Series will feature a centralized electronic and electrification (E/E) architecture, consolidating multiple electronic control units (ECUs) into a single main ECU.

This ECU will manage essential vehicle functions, including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), Automated Driving (AD), powertrain control, and vehicle comfort features. To handle this complexity, a high-performance, energy-efficient SoC is necessary.

Renesas provides automotive semiconductor solutions through its R-Car product line, designed with multi-die chiplet technology to deliver high AI performance with customization capabilities.

In this collaboration, Honda and Renesas will develop a high-performance SoC using TSMC's 3nm automotive process technology. This technology significantly reduces power consumption without compromising performance.

As part of the development, the multi-die chiplet technology will integrate Renesas' fifth-generation R-Car X5 with AI accelerators optimized by Honda.

This combination allows the SoC to achieve one of the best AI performances in the industry, supporting functions like AD and ADAS with high power efficiency. The chiplet technology also offers flexibility for future performance upgrades, ensuring solutions that evolve with market needs.

This collaboration continues the long-standing relationship between Honda and Renesas in automotive technology development, while enhancing the integration of semiconductor innovations and advanced software in the Honda 0 Series. This move aims to provide a better mobility experience for Honda customers worldwide.
