BBN Airlines Suspends Jakarta-Surabaya Flight Route: What Is The Reason?

Tuesday, 21 Jan 2025

PT BBN Airlines Indonesia has announced the termination of its Jakarta-Surabaya-Jakarta (CGK-SUB-CGK) flight route effective January 15, 2025. This route was only recently inaugurated on September 27, 2024. The Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) indicated that the airline's decision is documented in a letter sent by BBN Airlines, numbered PTBBN-SD-2025-01-08/352, regarding the closure of the Jakarta-Surabaya-Jakarta route, dated January 8, 2025. Acting Director General of Air Transportation at the Ministry of Transportation, Lukman F Laisa, stated that as of January 15, 2025, the specified flight route will no longer be operated by PT BBN Airlines Indonesia. He noted that the decision was influenced by market demand and network strategy alignment, as mentioned in an official statement on January 19, 2025.

Lukman further explained that the average load factor for the CGK-SUB-CGK route during the period from September 27, 2024, to January 15, 2025, was 43 percent. In contrast, from January 16, 2025, to March 29, 2025, the load factor dropped to a mere 5 percent. He also mentioned that starting January 9, 2025, PT BBN Airlines Indonesia has been notifying affected passengers about the flight cancellations through various information channels and sales distribution methods. Additionally, effective January 10, 2024, the airline has ceased sales for the CGK-SUB-CGK route to prevent further increases in the number of impacted passengers. Data from PT BBN Airlines Indonesia indicated that on January 15, 2025, there were 81 passengers on the CGK to SUB flight and 59 passengers on the return flight. As of January 16, 2025, there will be no flights operating on the CGK-SUB-CGK route. "Affected passengers have been fully compensated with refunds," he added.
