Wednesday, 05 Feb 2025

The traffic figures for 2024 released by the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) indicate robust growth in both the international passenger and cargo markets. Collectively, airlines in the Asia Pacific region transported a total of 365 million international passengers in 2024, reflecting a 30.5 percent increase compared to the previous year.

Demand, measured in revenue passenger kilometers (RPK), rose by 28.0 percent, highlighting the relative strength of regional routes. After accounting for a 26.6 percent increase in available seat capacity, the average international passenger load factor increased by 0.9 percentage points to reach 81.6 percent in 2024.

The international air cargo market also experienced healthy growth in 2024, following two years of decline. Demand, measured in freight ton kilometers (FTK), rebounded with a solid increase of 14.9 percent for the year, slightly surpassing the 14.6 percent growth in offered cargo capacity. Consequently, the average international cargo load factor rose by 0.2 percentage points to 61.0 percent in 2024.

"2024 has proven to be a strong year for Asia Pacific airlines. The post-pandemic recovery on Northeast Asia routes, aided by relaxed visa policies, along with robust overall demand across the region, has driven growth in both leisure and business travel markets," stated AAPA Director General Subhas Menon in a written statement on Monday, February 3. "This has resulted in a 30.5 percent increase in the number of international passengers transported during the year, reaching a total of 365 million," he added.
