In North America, particularly in the United States and Canada, Tesla's electric vehicle charging network, known as Tesla Supercharger, has maintained a dominant position in the market with minimal disruption. However, over the past year, a competitor named Ionna has begun to emerge. Ionna officially commenced operations in February 2024. This electric vehicle charging network is a joint venture among several automotive manufacturers, including Honda, Toyota, Mercedes Benz, BMW, Kia, Hyundai, Stellantis, and General Motors. In a short period, Ionna has evolved into a formidable competitor to Tesla Supercharger. Currently, Ionna has established a presence at 100 locations across the United States, which includes three new sites in Houston, Abilene, and Willcox. The company aims to open over 1,000 electric vehicle charging stations nationwide by 2025, with a long-term goal of operating up to 30,000 charging units by the end of the decade. One of Ionna's key offerings is the Ionna Genuine Charge Dispensers, which feature fast charging capabilities (DC). The company claims that these dispensers can operate at up to 400 kW, or up to 200 kW when charging two vehicles simultaneously. Each Ionna charging location will provide access to charging cables compatible with Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) or the Combined Charging System (CCS). Ionna is committed to serving all electric vehicles, including those not manufactured by the eight automotive companies involved in the joint venture. Ionna is strategically targeting locations along major highways for its charging stations, while also considering rural areas in addition to urban settings. Furthermore, Ionna has announced a partnership with Amazon to integrate the Just Walk Out technology. This Amazon technology is set to be implemented at every Ionna electric vehicle charging station.
