Sulsel-Sultra Plans To Launch Direct Flights From Bone To Kendari

Wednesday, 16 Apr 2025

The South Sulawesi Provincial Government is collaborating with the Southeast Sulawesi Provincial Government to explore the establishment of a direct flight route from Bone to Kendari. If this initiative comes to fruition, it is expected to significantly enhance transportation connectivity between the two regions. South Sulawesi Governor Andi Sudirman Sulaiman noted that there is a highly strategic relationship between these areas, with approximately 500,000 residents of Kendari having connections, either through ancestry or cultural ties, to the people of South Sulawesi. This close relationship is particularly evident among communities in the districts of Bone, Soppeng, Wajo, and Sinjai. Therefore, the introduction of a direct flight route would facilitate the movement of people between Kendari and South Sulawesi, and vice versa.

The economic impact is also anticipated to be substantial, as trade access is expected to become more efficient. "We have already discussed this with the Governor of Southeast Sulawesi, and the collaboration will be cooperative in nature. The plan is for Southeast Sulawesi to contribute 70% and South Sulawesi 30%," Andi Sudirman stated in an official announcement on Sunday, April 13, 2025. He further mentioned that this partnership may also involve the procurement of seaplanes or amphibious aircraft capable of landing on water. This initiative aims to reach remote islands, as there are around 70 inhabited islands in these two regions whose residents still require adequate connectivity. "In fact, we are not only discussing air routes but also the development of maritime transport. For this aspect, the contribution is likely to remain the same, with Southeast Sulawesi providing 70% and South Sulawesi 30%," Andi added.
