Four Airlines From The Lion Air Group Have Been Included In The List Of The 15 Airlines With The Highest Flight Cancellation Rates In The World For 2024

Tuesday, 04 Feb 2025

Four airlines from the Lion Air Group have set a record for having the highest flight cancellation rates in the world for 2024. This ranking was compiled by Cirium, a flight analytics company.

According to a report from visualcapitalist.com on Sunday, February 2, 2025, the top position in the list is held by the Nigerian airline, Dana Air. The majority of its cancellations were due to operational suspensions imposed by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority following an incident on the runway. As of January 2025, the airline remains grounded pending the results of safety and financial audits.

In second place is Lion Air from Indonesia, which recorded a cancellation rate of 16.7 percent from 125,550 flights throughout 2024. Following closely is its sister airline, Wings Air, with a cancellation rate of 16.3 percent from 62,176 flights.

Super Air Jet ranks sixth on the list of airlines with the highest cancellation rates in the world for 2024, with a rate of 14.7 percent from 89,453 scheduled flights. Batik Air occupies the eighth position, with a cancellation rate of 9.4 percent from 97,320 scheduled flights.

Cirium reports that the majority of cancellations for the Lion Air Group airlines are attributed to extreme weather conditions, such as the rainy season and volcanic eruptions, including a recent eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

Additionally, technical issues are frequently cited as reasons for cancellations, such as the incident involving Super Air Jet at Kualanamu Airport on Sunday, January 5, 2025, which sparked passenger outrage and went viral. Lifestyle Liputan6.com has reached out to the Lion Air Group for comments, but no response has been received.
