The Ministry Of Trade Seizes Rp11 Billion Worth Of Non-SNI Steel, Firmly Committed To Protecting Consumers

Friday, 27 Sep 2024

The Ministry of Trade is taking strong action to protect consumers from products that don't meet the Indonesian National Standard (SNI). Today, Thursday (September 26), Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan personally oversaw the seizure of 192,193 pieces of equal angle steel, weighing in at 1,100 tons and valued at IDR 11 billion, in Bekasi, West Java, due to their lack of SNI certification.

"These equal angle steel producers have been under surveillance since September 12, 2024. We confiscated these products because they lacked the necessary SNI certification and could pose risks to users as they are construction materials. Therefore, we took administrative action, and they will be destroyed. The government must be firm in protecting consumers," said Minister Zulkifli Hasan.

This action against the steel products follows the monitoring results from the Directorate of Supervision of Circulating Goods and Services, under the Directorate General of Consumer Protection and Trade Order (PKTN) at the Ministry of Trade.

Rusmin Amin, the Director General of Consumer Protection and Trade Order, stated that the businesses involved are suspected of violating the Minister of Trade Regulation No. 69 of 2018 regarding the Supervision of Circulating Goods and Services. Additionally, they are also believed to have breached Minister of Trade Regulation No. 21 of 2023, which amends Regulation No. 26 of 2021 concerning the Establishment of Business Activity Standards and Products in Risk-Based Trade Licensing.

"In this regulation, every business operator must comply with applicable laws before trading goods to protect consumers from potential negative impacts related to safety and security," explained Rusmin Amin.

Rusmin emphasized that consumer protection in trade activities for goods and services should be a priority for business operators. They need to ensure that all obligations are met and that the goods and services offered comply with the required technical standards.

"Any violations will face penalties as per the applicable regulations. The Ministry of Trade is dedicated to safeguarding Indonesian consumers and fostering a healthy business environment for trade in Indonesia," Rusmin concluded.

Also present at the event were representatives from the Ministry of Industry, the Criminal Investigation Agency of the Indonesian National Police, and the West Java Provincial Industry and Trade Office. Alongside Rusmin, Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan was accompanied by Secretary General of the Ministry of Trade Budi Santosa and Special Staff for International Trade Agreements Bara Hasibuan.
