Indonesia's Coffee Pride Shines As Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan Backs The Boost In Coffee Exports

Friday, 04 Oct 2024

Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan is all in for supporting businesses and farmers in boosting coffee exports. He emphasizes that coffee is a key commodity for Indonesia, playing a significant role in the economy. Plus, it’s been beneficial for farming communities across various regions in the country.

Zulkifli made these remarks during the launch of ‘Indonesia Origin Selection: A Celebration of the Unique Coffee Traditions & Farmers Behind Your Favorite Nespresso Coffee’ in Jakarta on Wednesday, October 2nd.

“Coffee remains a top priority for Indonesia’s exports, alongside other products. The hard work of our farmers and coffee entrepreneurs greatly contributes to Indonesia’s economy,” he stated.

He pointed out that coffee production has been on the rise from 2019 to 2023, and its success can serve as a model for developing agricultural products tailored to each region's potential.

“In the future, we need to develop our agricultural products based on regional strengths. This applies not just to coffee, but also to spices, chocolate, coconuts, and more. Coffee will continue to be a priority, and its downstream processes are crucial,” he added.

On the global trade front, Indonesia boasts a wide coffee export network. Major destinations for Indonesian coffee include the United States, Egypt, Malaysia, Japan, and China.

As one of the largest coffee producers in the world, Indonesia has a great opportunity to meet global market demands by exporting both green beans and roasted beans. The global coffee market is highly competitive, so it’s essential to have the right strategies to promote and enhance the trade value of Indonesian coffee worldwide.

The global coffee enthusiast scene is on the rise, with a growing demand for high-quality brews. A clear sign of this is the 12% increase in coffee imports worldwide over the past five years (2019-2023).

Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan has expressed his appreciation for PT Nestle Indonesia, which has launched a new line of Nespresso coffee capsules themed “Indonesia Origin Selection.” He believes that this new product launch can boost the momentum for Indonesian coffee exports.

“The Ministry of Trade appreciates PT Nestle Indonesia for continuously promoting Indonesian coffee in the global market. We hope this product launch can quickly and effectively introduce the unique flavors of Indonesian coffee to the world,” said Minister Zulkifli Hasan.

He also pointed out that there are many challenges in meeting the demand for coffee, especially specialty and premium varieties that prioritize eco-friendliness. Additionally, both local and international coffee consumers are becoming more discerning about the origins of their coffee and sustainable practices. Therefore, the Ministry of Trade is committed to supporting coffee exports and related products.

According to Minister Zulkifli Hasan, the Ministry is taking various steps to bolster coffee exports, including opening up foreign market access through trade agreements. They are actively working to establish trade relations with partner countries through Free Trade Agreements (FTA), Preferential Trade Agreements (PTA), and Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreements (CEPA). “These efforts serve as a 'toll way' for Indonesia's exports to trading partners,” he stated.

Another initiative involves providing support facilities for exporters. This way, the Ministry of Trade aims to facilitate smooth exports by assisting with export certification and export planning. Additionally, there will be promotional opportunities through the Trade Expo Indonesia (TEI), which is set to take place again from October 9 to 12, 2024.
