The Indonesian U-20 national team faced another defeat in the U-20 Challenge Series. Following a previous loss of 0-1 to the Jordan U-20 team, Garuda Asia conceded to the Syrian U-20 team with a score of 0-2 at Gelora Delta Stadium in Sidoarjo on the evening of January 27, 2025. The goals for Syria were scored by Majd Manaf Ramadan in the 28th minute and Anas Hussam Dahhan in the 66th minute. The Indonesian U-20 national team was unable to respond with any goals during this match. There are numerous aspects that require evaluation by the Indonesian U-20 national team. Coach Indra Sjafri remarked that his team made several mistakes, particularly in anticipating the two goals scored by their opponents. "I believe all my players performed well. However, there were indeed group errors and tactical issues. The two goals resulted from these mistakes, and that is what we will work on improving," Indra Sjafri stated after the match. The Indonesian U-20 national team aimed to play an open game. As is customary, they relied on long passes from both the wings and the center. Unfortunately, many of these passes were intercepted by the opposing players. "We do not intend to play defensively or in a closed manner; rather, we strive to play more offensively. I think Syria played quickly today. Their transition from defense to attack was rapid, as was their transition from attack to defense," Indra Sjafri commented. Understanding Team Quality The two goals scored by Syria were the result of well-executed plays. The first goal came from solid teamwork before Manaf headed the ball into the net. The second goal resulted from a free kick taken by Anas, which was unstopable for goalkeeper Ikram Algiffari. Indra Sjafri noted that he gained valuable lessons from this match. It is important to recognize that this Challenge Series is part of the preparation for the Indonesian U-20 national team ahead of the U-20 Asian Cup 2025, scheduled to take place on February 12, 2025.
