The Alternativa Film Project, a global non-profit film initiative founded by the international technology company inDrive, will host the second edition of the Alternativa Film Awards, which are nomadic or moving around. The event aims to recognize the social impact of emerging industry films, and in Indonesia, the event will take place at the end of November 2024. Additionally, as part of the expanded program in 2024, a new festival and awards ceremony will be launched in Indonesia, showcasing all selected films from the nominees.Indonesia has been chosen as the next country to host the Alternativa Film Project after its success in the inaugural edition in 2023, held in Kazakhstan. For the upcoming second edition, the project will expand its focus on the Indonesian and Southeast Asian markets.Registration for the awards will open on June 17, 2024, inviting filmmakers from across Asia to submit feature films, documentaries, animations, and mixed films for competition. The winners of the Alternativa Film Project will be selected by an International Jury consisting of directors and producers from Asia and other regions, as well as community figures and representatives from NGOs. This event provides an alternative system to recognize professionals who have a vision to create an impact, making them more visible on a global scale and giving them a platform to reach a wider audience.This initiative recognizes films with artistic excellence that also address important social and cultural topics, and have the ambition to make a positive impact on the lives of local communities. The Jury Board will announce the winners who will receive a cash prize, which can be used for impactful campaigns or further development of filmmaking skills.The total prize money reaches $100,000, with each winner receiving $20,000 for four categories of Feature Films, and $10,000 each for two winners in theShort Film category.This new festival will include all nominated titles and will take place throughout the week leading up to November 2024, marking the evolution of the Alternativa film project, which also includes education and outreach through Alternativa Film Labs.This expansion is a natural evolution of the nomadic nature of Alternativa and with each edition, the initiative aims to increase its geographical footprint and provide real, sustainable support for filmmakers.Liza Surganova, Project Head of Film Alternativa, said, "The Alternativa Film Awards serve as a tool to support the development of the local film industry by celebrating filmmakers from underrepresented communities, who have important stories to tell and the potential to influence cultural and social landscapes.Cinema is a powerful way to create change and ambition, Alternativa is not only to challenge injustices in the film industry, but also to bring real progress to the world - that's why it's so important to share the selected films with the public through our new Festival initiative."We take Alternativa to new markets every year and build ongoing initiatives from year to year at each of our locations, hoping this nomadic approach will allow us to engage a wider international audience.We are very proud of the success stories that emerged in our first edition, and we are excited to expand our work throughout Indonesia and beyond," added Liza Surganova. In 2023, the Alternativa Film Project supported a number of filmmakers with 350 works accepted in 25 countries. Five of them are "Spotlight," "Future Voice," "Alter," "Nativa," and "Shorts" which are in the spotlight.The award-winning "Nativa" is a documentary film from Nepal by Rajan Kathet and Sunir Pandey titled "No Winter Holidays" has used its prize money to organize the theatrical distribution of the film in Nepal, along with screenings for the local community, filming and screening for younger audiences in schools and universities. The project highlights themes such as poverty, gender roles, rural-urban divide, cheap migration for economic resources, and isolation.
