Sinar Mas Land has launched the SELARAS Ecosystem (Center for Education on Clean and Green Environment) in BSD City, specifically in Kampung Cicayur, Pagedangan District, Tangerang Regency, Banten Province. This initiative is part of their commitment to promote community-based environmental management. The SELARAS Ecosystem serves as a program and a space for educating the community and school students about environmental management, focusing on responsible, creative, and wise waste management based on circular and sustainable principles. The implementation of the SELARAS Ecosystem is a social collaboration between Sinar Mas Land's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) & Green Initiative Division, the Tangerang Regency Waste Bank, and the Bumi Pertiwi Asri Foundation (BPA). The SELARAS Ecosystem officially started operations on September 26, 2024, and is open to local residents and educational institutions interested in learning more about waste management to create economic value through the establishment of Waste Banks, Fertilizer Houses, and Waste Management Schools. Dony Martadisata, Managing Director of the President Office at Sinar Mas Land, stated, “We believe that change will have a broader impact when it starts from the collective awareness of the community. With the introduction of the SELARAS Ecosystem, we hope to foster positive change and encourage community members to care for the environment while benefiting from circular and sustainable economies.” This initiative not only aids in independent waste management but also creates circular economic opportunities for local residents. The program aims to be a model for community-based education and environmental management that effectively addresses waste issues in Indonesia. The waste bank at SELARAS Ecosystem manages sorted inorganic waste. This waste is properly processed for recycling to prevent environmental pollution. Sinar Mas Land has also implemented a program for converting sorted waste, including initiatives like Plastic to Food and Plastic to Book, which were introduced in several areas of BSD City. From November 2021 to November 2024, the Plastic to Food program collected 8,116 kg of used plastic, converting it into 4,550 kg of rice and 263 liters of cooking oil for 3,716 residents. Meanwhile, the Plastic to Book program gathered 731 kg of used plastic, turning it into 283 books, with participation from 582 students across five schools. The plastics collected from both programs are further processed. Some are converted through pyrolysis into diesel fuel, which is then used for the vehicles that transport sorted waste. Other plastic waste is turned into plastic pellets, which are used as a mix for asphalt on the roads in BSD City. Funds from selling some of the recycled plastic support community business ventures, such as maggot farming and poultry raising. Additionally, the Fertilizer House at SELARAS Ecosystem manages organic waste, particularly leaves and plant materials. This initiative aims to prevent the burning of such waste by encouraging its conversion into compost, which has greater value. SELARAS Ecosystem also offers a Waste Management School, providing educational classes for the community, especially the youth, on the importance of sustainable waste management. The Waste Management School has been held at the SELARAS Ecosystem site and in five schools, with a total of 210 students participating.
