PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM) in Huu District, Dompu Regency, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), has once again extended the suspension of exploration activities. Initially set to last until the end of December 2024, the copper exploration activities will now be halted until 2025. This decision follows unrest among a group of residents that resulted in the burning of several office facilities recently. "STM has established a maintenance and care status for the Huu project in 2025," stated Cindy Elza, Principal Communications of PT STM, in a written statement on Wednesday, November 20, 2024. Cindy Elza elaborated that with the designation of maintenance and care status, the company's activities in 2025 will be limited, focusing on asset maintenance and compliance with applicable regulations. Additionally, the company will take this opportunity to conduct a comprehensive review of its activity plans and the sustainability of its investments in Huu District. Meanwhile, all exploration activities will be completely suspended throughout 2025. "Exploration drilling activities are temporarily halted," she remarked. This limitation on activities will result in a reduction of employees that the company and its partners will engage. However, at this time, the company cannot confirm the number of employees that will be affected. "We are unable to confirm this matter; further evaluation by STM and its partners is necessary," she explained. According to her, social dynamics in the development of a mining project are considered normal. Therefore, she hopes that all stakeholders will act wisely in addressing and supporting a conducive environment at the mining site. "This status does not affect STM's long-term commitment to the development of the Huu project," concluded Cindy.
