Tuesday, 04 Feb 2025

Indonesia has made history by becoming the seventh-largest economy in the world at the beginning of 2025. Unfortunately, despite the continuous growth of Indonesia's economy, millions of its citizens live in extreme poverty, with daily expenditures below Rp 10,739.

According to a report by Kompas.com, the Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment, Muhaimin Iskandar, also known as Cak Imin, stated that approximately 3.1 million Indonesians fall into the category of extreme poverty. This information was shared by Cak Imin following a coordination meeting on social and economic data with the Ministry of Social Affairs, the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Cooperatives, the Secretary of State, and the Central Statistics Agency (BPS).

"There are 3.1 million Indonesians still classified as extremely poor, which includes around 790,000 heads of households," Cak Imin remarked after the meeting held at the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs on Thursday, January 30, 2025.

Cak Imin emphasized that the government is currently striving to address all issues related to extreme poverty in Indonesia comprehensively.

He outlined three phases that the government will implement to provide assistance to the 3.1 million impoverished individuals. "The first phase involves special aid for those in extreme poverty. The second phase will focus on providing access to those who are productive in terms of age, capacity building, and skills to enable them to work productively," Cak Imin explained.

In the third phase, the government aims to encourage the impoverished population to achieve self-sufficiency through the access provided. "In the next three months, we will target 3.1 million individuals living in extreme poverty to receive special assistance to expedite their transition out of extreme poverty," he stated.

The Chairman of the National Awakening Party also mentioned that the inter-ministerial meeting discussed the unified social and economic data presented by the Acting Head of the Central Statistics Agency, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti. "We are grateful for the improvements made by the Head of BPS. The process has become much faster, and this unified data will soon be available for all ministries that require it," Cak Imin added.
