The Intensifying Trade War Is Impacting The Economic Cooperation Between Indonesia And Australia

Economic cooperation between Indonesia and Australia must be continuously enhanced amidst the escalating tensions of the trade war that loom over the global economy. Jennifer Westacott, Australia’s Business Champion for Indonesia, stated that the current trade war conditions have the potential to impact the collaboration between Australia and Indonesia. This is particularly relevant given the differing trade relationships that Indonesia and Australia have with key players in the trade war, such as the United States. She noted that Indonesia is not a target of the tariff policies implemented by U.S. President Donald Trump. In contrast, Australia may be affected by the recently imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum by the U.S. 

"Australia clearly has a different trading relationship. We maintain a trade surplus with the United States," she explained during a press conference at the Australian Embassy in Jakarta, as reported on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. Nevertheless, Westacott emphasized the importance of strengthening economic cooperation between Indonesia and Australia in light of the current global uncertainties. She asserted that both nations should concentrate on controllable aspects as part of their economic cooperation agreement. 

As a key supporter of trade and investment relations between Australia and Indonesia, Westacott expressed her readiness to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to deepen the economic partnership between the two countries amid the prevailing global uncertainties. "We recognize the significantly disruptive global conditions. However, at the same time, we must ensure that both countries continue to work together as partners and make this cooperation as effective as possible," Westacott stated. Furthermore, according to an official statement from the Australian Embassy in Indonesia, Westacott is leading a high-level business delegation and has commenced their four-day program in Jakarta since Monday, January 10, 2025.
