Airlangga Is Advocating For The Expedited Completion Of The IEU-CEPA Agreement With France

Monday, 10 Mar 2025

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto has urged for the expedited conclusion of the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA) during a meeting with French Minister of Economy, Finance, and Sovereignty of Industry and Digital Affairs Eric Lombard.

This bilateral meeting took place during a working visit to Paris, France. To date, negotiations for the IEU-CEPA have progressed through 19 rounds over the past nine years.

"The completion of the IEU-CEPA represents a timely opportunity as the world faces uncertainties due to the foreign policy of former U.S. President Trump. Indonesia is open to dialogue and hopes that both Indonesia and the European Union can find a middle ground that accommodates mutual interests," stated Airlangga in a press release from Jakarta on Thursday.

The conclusion of the IEU-CEPA negotiations is believed to be a significant step towards strengthening trade and investment between regions.

Minister Lombard welcomed Minister Airlangga's request, indicating that France will continue to engage in dialogue while preparing financial concessions for investment projects through the CEPA.

He noted that the CEPA requires robust market access, attention to environmental issues, and resilient commercial relations.

Furthermore, the two ministers discussed efforts to enhance economic cooperation between Indonesia and France across various strategic sectors, including trade, investment, and mineral resources.

Airlangga also outlined Indonesia's target for economic growth of 8 percent over time, expressing the nation's aspiration to become a developed country with a per capita income comparable to that of developed nations.

Consequently, Indonesia seeks France's support in the OECD accession process and the development of French industry and investment within Indonesia.

One significant investment highlighted is the Eramet Group, which is collaborating with China in North Maluku. The Eramet Group is currently expanding its involvement in the electric vehicle (EV) battery value chain based on nickel by optimizing resource potential in Weda Bay, Central Halmahera.
