Prabowo Will Go To Hanoi To Sign The EEZ Agreement Between Indonesia And Vietnam

President Prabowo Subianto will soon visit Hanoi, Vietnam and make a return visit to the Secretary General (Sekjen) of the Communist Party of Vietnam (PKV) His Excellency To Lam. Prabowo will sign the negotiations on the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) boundary between Indonesia and Vietnam which have been discussed for dozens of years. 

"I would like to thank you again for this visit and I have stated that I will make a return visit to Vietnam in the near future," Prabowo said in a press conference after meeting with Secretary General To Lam, at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Monday (10/3/2025). 

"And there I hope we can sign the implementing agreement in our cooperation in our economic zone, namely a cooperation agreement between the two countries that resolves a problem that we have not resolved for quite some time. Maybe dozens of years. Alhamdulillah, it's finished," Prabowo continued. 

Prabowo said the ratification process for the agreement would be carried out in their respective parliaments. After ratification, Prabowo will visit Vietnam to sign. 

"And ratification by our parliament in April after Eid al-Fitr, and they will also ratify in the near future in their legislature. God willing, I will sign in Hanoi during my state visit in return for His Majesty's visit," he said 

"I welcome the agreement that we have agreed to and I am sure it will bring prosperity to our people," Prabowo continued. 

Previously, the Indonesia-Vietnam EEZ agreement was completed in 2022 after 12 years of negotiations. The settlement was previously announced by the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, after meeting with Vietnamese President Nguyen Xuan Phuc, at the Bogor Palace, West Java, Thursday (12/22/2022). The settlement was carried out based on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). 

"After conducting intensive negotiations for 12 years, Indonesia and Vietnam have finally been able to complete negotiations on the EEZ boundaries of the two countries based on UNCLOS 1982," Jokowi said at that time. 

Meanwhile, Vietnamese President Nguyen Xuan Phuc said that the completion of negotiations on the EEZ boundaries of Vietnam and Indonesia was for the good of the people of both countries. 

"We must also provide momentum for cooperation between Vietnam and Indonesia for the good of the people of both countries. As conveyed by President Jokowi, we have agreed to EEZ negotiations based on international law and UNCLOS 1982," Phuc said.
