RI May Face 47% Import Tariff From Trump, Here’s The Explanation!

Wednesday, 23 Apr 2025

The Indonesian government has announced that the country will receive higher tariffs from the United States for products such as garments, footwear, textiles, furniture, and shrimp, compared to other ASEAN nations.

During a press conference following negotiations with the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) in Washington on Friday, April 18, 2025, Indonesia's Chief Negotiator, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, stated that the additional tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump could raise the import duties on Indonesia's key products to as much as 47%. This rate is significantly higher than that applied to competing countries in ASEAN.

"We emphasize that the tariffs imposed by the U.S. have not created a level playing field, particularly in comparison to our competitors in ASEAN, and we seek to be granted tariffs that are not excessively high," Airlangga asserted during the online press conference.

He noted that although the current high tariff of 32% has been temporarily reduced to 10% for three months, the U.S. continues to apply protective tariffs on Indonesian textiles and garments, ranging from 10% to 37%. When combined, these tariffs could result in a total rate of 20% to 47% for Indonesian commodities.

"Even though the tariff is set at 10% for 90 days, there is already a tariff of 10% to 37% on textiles and garments, meaning the additional 10% could result in rates of either 10% + 10% or 37% + 10%," Airlangga explained.

This situation is a concern for the government.

"This is a concern for us because our export costs are higher, which affects both the buyers and Indonesia as the exporter," he emphasized.

Airlangga also mentioned that Indonesia and the United States have agreed to conclude trade negotiations within 60 days. During the meeting, a framework and format for the negotiations were also established.
