Palace: Trump Import Tariffs Open New Market Opportunities For Indonesia

Thursday, 24 Apr 2025

Minister of State Secretary and Presidential Palace Spokesperson, Prasetyo Hadi, said that US President Donald Trump's import tariffs have opened up new market opportunities for Indonesia. Prasetyo said that Indonesia is opening up opportunities to find new markets other than the United States. "That also has a positive impact on ourselves. That then there are things that we need to fix both in terms of regulations, then from the side of our industries, including finding new markets, not just America," said Prasetyo at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, April 21, 2025.

However, Prasetyo said that the Indonesian government's negotiation team is still negotiating intensively with the United States regarding Trump's import tariffs. The team is led by Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono. Deputy Chairperson of the National Economic Council Marie Elka Pangestu also joined. "We continue to coordinate with each other to anticipate and update the results of the negotiations," he said. The United States currently applies an initial base tariff of 10 percent of the initial applicable tariff. Meanwhile, the reciprocal tariff which has increased to 32 percent is still in the postponement stage and is valid for 90 days since the policy was issued.

The Indonesian government has sent a delegation to negotiate Trump's tariff policy. Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto said that one of the negotiations offered was to increase purchases of products from the United States and provide incentives for companies from Uncle Sam's country operating in Indonesia.

The delegation team currently in Washington DC said the points of the offer were as stated in the previous official letter. "There are several things that have been proposed, Indonesia will increase energy purchases from the United States, including LPG, then also crude oil, and gasoline," said Airlangga in a press conference held online on Friday morning, April 18, 2025.

Another offer in the negotiations is cooperation between countries in the investment sector. Indonesia, said Airlangga, encourages investment to be carried out on a business-to-business basis. Also encouraged is the strengthening of cooperation in the human resource development sector, including for the education, science, technology, engineering, mathematics, digital economy sectors.

Airlangga added that the government also discussed financial services. "Indonesia also raised financial services that tend to benefit the United States," he said.
