Tuesday, 12 Nov 2024

The Indonesian government has identified several leading vaccine manufacturers from different countries to develop a Tuberculosis (TB) vaccine.

This initiative is part of the government's efforts to strengthen the TB control program in Indonesia, as the country has one of the highest TB burdens in the world.

"There are three TB vaccine candidates we are approaching, each from a different country," said the Minister of Health in Bali on Monday (November 11).

The first candidate is a TB vaccine developed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) from the United States. This vaccine uses recombinant protein technology.

The second candidate is being developed through a collaboration between the Chinese pharmaceutical company CanSino and the Indonesian biopharmaceutical company Etana. This vaccine is using viral-vector technology and is currently in the first phase of clinical trials.

The third candidate is developed by the German biotechnology company BioNTech and the Indonesian pharmaceutical company Biofarma. This vaccine utilizes mRNA technology.

"We will also contribute to the clinical trial process for these three TB vaccine manufacturers," the Minister of Health stated.

Furthermore, the Minister mentioned that the vaccines being developed will be for both children and adults. Additionally, the vaccines will be aimed at those who are uninfected as well as those already infected with the TB virus.
