Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto held a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, November 18, 2024, during the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The discussions focused on various strategic cooperation opportunities in the fields of health, education, and trade, aimed at strengthening the bilateral relationship between the two nations. In his remarks, President Prabowo expressed gratitude for India's gesture of sending Special Envoy Pabitra Margherita to attend his inauguration a few weeks prior. "Indonesia and India share a long-standing and positive relationship. We highly value this connection and are committed to enhancing it across multiple sectors," stated President Prabowo. The President also highlighted the potential for collaboration in health and education, noting Indonesia's urgent need for medical professionals, with a current shortfall of 160,000 doctors. "We hope to enhance our cooperation with India, particularly through the dispatch of professors and specialist doctors to teach at our universities," President Prabowo remarked. Furthermore, he welcomed the interest of Indian companies in the health sector, including pharmaceuticals and the establishment of foreign hospital branches in Indonesia. He emphasized the importance of increasing the number of Indonesian students studying in India and fostering closer educational collaboration. During the meeting, President Prabowo also underscored the significance of trade cooperation, particularly concerning rice imports from India. "We hope to finalize the agreement for rice imports from India," the President concluded.
