The Government Is Set To Establish A Task Force To Address Layoffs

Monday, 02 Dec 2024

The government is planning to establish a special Task Force (Satgas) to address the issue of Termination of Employment (PHK).

This announcement was made by the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, during the National Leadership Meeting (Rapimnas) of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) at Hotel Mulia, Jakarta, on Sunday (December 1).

"The government will create a task force related to PHK," stated Airlangga.

He did not provide specific details regarding the operations of this task force. However, it is clear that the task force will first analyze the core issues affecting domestic industries and their connection to the recent increase in layoffs.

The Ministry of Manpower (Kemnaker) has reported that from January to October of this year, the number of layoffs has reached 63,947 workers.

This figure is nearly equivalent to the total number of layoffs for the entire year of 2023, representing 98.55% of the 64,884 layoffs recorded last year.

The Minister of Manpower, Yassierli, indicated that the issue of job loss in Indonesia is a consequence of macroeconomic conditions, global geopolitical factors, and business competitiveness.

He emphasized the need for intervention in affected industries to mitigate these challenges.

"We will initiate a national productivity enhancement movement. This step is part of our efforts to address the low competitiveness or productivity, necessitating intervention to improve productivity," he stated.
