IKN Is Set To Become The Political Capital Of Indonesia In 2028: What Does This Imply?

Friday, 31 Jan 2025

The Nusantara Capital City (IKN) in East Kalimantan is under construction to serve as the governmental center by 2028. Achieving this goal necessitates the completion of essential supporting infrastructure, particularly in the legislative and judicial sectors. A primary focus is the development of government buildings, including those for the House of Representatives, the Supreme Court, and other legal institutions. Without this infrastructure, IKN will be unable to fully perform its governmental functions.

President Prabowo Subianto aims for the executive, legislative, and judicial institutions to officially commence operations in the area within the next three years. This ambitious project seeks to enhance Indonesia's position as a country with integrated governance.

The acceleration of this initiative involves a national budget allocation of IDR 48.8 trillion in the 2025 State Budget. This budget is designed to ensure the smooth progress of infrastructure and supporting facilities development. The Nusantara Capital Authority (OIKN) and the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) have been tasked with reviewing the designs for the legislative and judicial areas to meet global standards.

OIKN Head Basuki Hadimuljono stated that the project encompasses various vital elements, such as legislative and judicial offices, official residences, and supporting facilities. As summarized by Liputan6.com from various sources on Tuesday (January 28, 2025), this is an overview of what IKN will look like as Indonesia's Political Capital in 2028.

What Does It Mean for IKN to Become the Political Capital?

President Prabowo Subianto, as mentioned by OIKN Head Basuki Hadimuljono in Sepaku, Penajam Paser Utara, on Saturday, has set the target for Nusantara City to be designated as the political capital by 2028. If the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) is established as the political capital, all primary governmental functions—executive, legislative, and judicial—will be centralized there. The Presidential Office, ministries, the House of Representatives, the Supreme Court, and other judicial institutions will operate in IKN, making it the center for political and legal decision-making in Indonesia.
