Tuesday, 08 Apr 2025

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to fly from Jakarta to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Sunday night, to meet Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya told reporters in Jakarta, Sunday, that President Prabowo's visit to Kuala Lumpur was to meet PM Anwar during the Eid al-Fitr 1446 Hijriah celebrations.

"President Prabowo highly respects PM Anwar as a senior leader in ASEAN who has extensive experience. He was the prime minister first, is also more senior in age, and is an old friend of the President," said Teddy Teddy, who will also accompany President Prabowo to Kuala Lumpur, said that after meeting PM Anwar, President Prabowo would immediately fly back to Jakarta.

"(President Prabowo, ed.) will immediately return to Jakarta tonight," he said. Cabinet Secretary Teddy, when asked whether President Prabowo and PM Anwar would also discuss Trump's tariffs, said that the two heads of state would certainly discuss many things when they meet. "Of course, if the two heads of state have met, they will definitely discuss many things," said Teddy in response to journalists' questions.

President Prabowo, PM Anwar, together with Brunei Darussalam King Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, and Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, discussed strategies to deal with the United States' import tariff policy set by US President Donald Trump earlier this week via telephone.

PM Anwar after the conversation stated that each leader shared their views on Trump's tariff policy and coordinated a joint response to the policy.

"Today I had the opportunity to have a telephone discussion with the leaders of ASEAN countries, including Indonesia, the Philippines, Brunei Darussalam, and Singapore to obtain views and coordinate a joint response to the issue of reciprocal tariffs by the United States," said PM Anwar as quoted from his official social media account in Jakarta, Saturday (5/4). PM Anwar explained that economic ministers from ASEAN countries would meet next week to discuss a joint response to Trump's tariff policy. "God willing, the ASEAN economic ministers' meeting next week will continue to discuss this issue and seek the best solution for all member countries," PM Anwar said. US President Donald Trump on April 2, 2025 announced a reciprocal tariff policy for several countries, including Indonesia, which will be effective three days after it was announced. Trump's policy was implemented in stages, starting with the imposition of a general tariff of 10 percent for all countries starting April 5, 2025, then a special tariff for several countries, including Indonesia, starting on April 9, 2025 at 00.01 EDT (11.01 WIB). From the latest US policy, Indonesia is subject to a reciprocal tariff of 32 percent, while the Philippines is 17 percent, Singapore is 10 percent, Malaysia is 24 percent, Cambodia is 49 percent, Thailand is 36 percent, and Vietnam is 46 percent.
