Digital Literacy For Women: KemenPPPA Collaborates With Komdigi To Create Red And White Space

Thursday, 21 Nov 2024

The Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA) is collaborating with several ministries to establish the Merah Putih space. This initiative aims to create these spaces in villages to enhance creativity and digital literacy among women and children.

Minister of PPPA, Arifah Choiri Fauzi, stated that the Merah Putih space is inspired by an idea proposed by President Prabowo Subianto. Additionally, the increasing number of women and children falling victim to crimes on social media has further motivated the creation of the Merah Putih space. "We recognize that social media poses general dangers, particularly for women and children. This is a shared concern, especially given several cases we are currently addressing. Our recent field visits revealed that many issues stem from the improper use of social media," Arifah remarked during a press conference at the Komdigi office in Central Jakarta on Monday, November 18, 2024.

Arifah explained that the Merah Putih space will be established in every village, with the inaugural launch scheduled to take place in Tangerang on December 22, coinciding with Mother's Day.

"The foundation of the Merah Putih space is at the village level, serving as a collaborative platform for all ministries. For children, we hope that by limiting their social media usage, we can provide alternative solutions, such as traditional games," she added.

She explained that there will be solutions offered in response to social media restrictions. One of these solutions involves introducing traditional games to children.

"Therefore, one of the initiatives we will propose is to provide traditional games, as these games embody valuable philosophies. They encourage collaboration, teamwork, sportsmanship, and fairness, requiring children to take turns and treating each other equally, regardless of their religious backgrounds. In playing, there are no distinctions. Here, we instill the values of Pancasila and the principles of unity in diversity, ensuring that despite their differences, they can still come together," she continued. Arifah elaborated that the creativity of the children will be nurtured with guidance from final-year university students. Consequently, she hopes that the time children spend will not be consumed by gadget use.

"Secondly, we aim to enhance the creativity and skills of the children. For those interested in dance, we will bring in dance instructors; for those who enjoy writing, drawing, singing, or acting, we will provide relevant mentors," Arifah stated.

She mentioned that the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection has already reached out to the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education to request that students engaged in their thesis internships first participate in the Merah Putih space. They will offer valuable experiences to the children, ensuring their time is not wasted on gadgets. Furthermore, Arifah indicated that women will receive training in digital literacy. She hopes that women will not fall victim to online lending schemes and will be able to utilize social media effectively.
