Saturday, 22 Mar 2025

The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) has emphasized that there are currently no plans to replace the Satria I satellite with Amazon Kuiper. The government continues to rely on Satria I for providing internet access in remote, underdeveloped, and outermost areas (3T). Minister of Communication and Digital (Menkomdigi) Meutya Hafid stated that there is no intention to substitute Satria, even with the potential collaboration with Amazon Kuiper. "No, there are no plans regarding that (replacing Satria)," Meutya remarked at her office on Tuesday, March 18, 2025.

As of August 8, 2024, the Bakti Internet Access Program by Kominfo has reportedly served a total of 18,712 locations across Indonesia, including those in the 3T category. Of these, 4,078 locations have been serviced by Satria-1, which offers a capacity of 150 gigabytes per second (gbps) for broader and faster internet connectivity, with plans to expand this to 20,000 locations by 2024. Currently, Komdigi is looking to partner with Amazon Kuiper to enhance digital connectivity in the 3T regions, thereby supporting the national digital transformation.

Meutya underscored the significant role of satellite technology in bridging the digital divide, particularly in remote areas. "We are open to any investments and new technologies that can assist us in achieving connectivity in Indonesia," Meutya stated during a meeting with Amazon Kuiper, as reported on Tuesday, March 18, 2025. She further noted that the introduction of this technology could bolster the development of the national digital ecosystem, including empowering Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and enhancing e-government, e-health, and e-education services. Komdigi will continue to facilitate the necessary licensing processes and discussions to ensure the smooth execution of this project. With a strong synergy between the government and the private sector, millions of people in the 3T regions are expected to soon benefit from improved internet access, unlocking digital economic opportunities and enhancing the quality of education and healthcare services.
